aging quietly

its that time of night
when the world is quiet

windows open,
ceiling fans on,
and most of the
lights are off

dogs recharging
their batteries
for another
long day

lent a ten year old
some poetry
today;

mary oliver
ee cummings

will one poem
about spring
or wildgeese
change her life
forever?

i hope so.

when the car door slams
and it's 11:30pm
the dogs bark

i see two young boys
meet the two girls
who have been
waiting

under the gazebo


and i remember being
there,
i know
they are all
not supposed to
be there either

i see them,
and feel
instantly
protective
and
excited
for them

there is
that quiet
understanding
about
tonight
